What makes you so passionate about farming?
Passion is a great word because passion drives you to work harder or play smarter. Passion makes you milk an hour earlier so you can get away fishing or milk an hour later so you can enjoy watching your kids play sport. Passion drives you when the winters are wet and summers are dry or to work through the night to get the job finished before the weather changes. Passion will drive you every day of your life if you let it.
You need to be passionate about farming to be a good farmer there are no shades of grey about it (no reference intended). The more passionate you are the easier you will find making decisions. If you make decisions you will be successful.
When was the last time you sat down and really thought about it and honestly said this is why I love the business I am in? Too busy, Too much to do, not enough time in the day!
I am proud to say I am a farmer. I simply loved every aspect about farming. After calving I would have my first trip into town, all of 30 kms away and my wife would joke about the big grey line called a road and if we follow it we will come to a cluster of buildings which is called a town and there are shops there where you can purchase things to eat and wear….. I simply loved the adrenalin, the mud, the rain and pressures of calving. I had no inclination to do anything else. I was passionate about what I did.
Sometimes fear stops us asking the hard questions of ourselves in case we don’t like the answer we come up with. Maybe you are passionate about your animals but deep down you are actually unhappy about the way they look or are performing, maybe you are passionate about pastures but are caught in a rut and rely on the PKE truck to fill feedgaps that pasture should be filling.
So coming back to the original question. What makes you passionate about farming? What are you willing to do to follow your passion? what are you willing to change?
I look forward to your comments
